Does FDI in China Displace Foreign Jobs in Asia?
2014
This paper studies the China effect from a novel perspective. We focus on the effect of FDI in China on foreign employment flows in the rest of Asia. The concentration of FDI in China may divert employment from similar surrounding countries. Offsetting this negative effect, MNE activities might spillover to neighboring countries along the foreign production chain. Therefore, the effect of global FDI champions is uncertain. Most studies on this issue focus on trade and FDI inflows. The China effect on other aspects of international production, like employment, remains largely unknown. The contributions of this paper are twofold. First, we enhance the estimation of the China effect with recen…
A user-friendly control system to easy reconfigure a manufacturing cell
2006
Generic manufacturing enterprises need to interact with an environment characterized by a strong competition. In order to react to the mutable requests of market, control systems should confer to the manufacturing system capabilities for easy modifiability, and this can be achieved by reducing the necessary time to reconfigure the existing system. Following this main requirement, this paper presents a user-friendly control system that pursues three operational goals: - Ability to easy re-program the sequence of operations of the manufacturing equipments of a manufacturing cell; - Reconfigurability of the system, by allowing to add/remove a new/existing component in/from the manufacturing ce…
Why Bring Organic and Molecular Electronics to Spintronics
2015
Organic spintronics field is an emerging field at the frontier between organic chemistry and spintronics. Exploiting the peculiarity of these two fields, it combines the flexibility, versatility and low production cost of organic materials with the nonvolatility, spin degree of freedom and beyond CMOS capabilities offered by spintronics. Before starting the discussion on the organic spintronics field, in this chapter will be provided a brief introduction on organic and molecular electronics and the specificities of molecules. This will help to understand the advantages that molecular systems can bring to spintronics.
HOLONIC PRODUCTION SYSTEM TO OBTAIN FLEXIBILITY FOR CUSTOMER SATISFACTION
2008
The Holonic Production System (HPS) can be a valid choice to overcome the problems of traditional production sys-tems’ architectures, thanks to its capability to adapt and react to changes in the business environment whilst being able to maintain systemic synergies and coordination. The HPS is made of holons seen as functional production units which are simultaneously autonomous and cooperative. Although the holonic approach could represent a valid solution in order to pursue the necessary levels of agility of production systems, they have been scarcely implemented in practice and even less studied from a business studies perspective. The purpose of this discussion paper is to show the bene…
Optimization of Long-Run Average-Flow Cost in Networks With Time-Varying Unknown Demand
2010
We consider continuous-time robust network flows with capacity constraints and unknown but bounded time-varying demand. The problem of interest is to design a control strategy off-line with no knowledge of the demand realization. Such a control strategy regulates the flow on-line as a function of the realized demand. We address both the case of systems without and with buffers. The main novelty in this work is that we consider a convex cost which is a function of the long-run average-flow and average-demand. We distinguish a worst-case scenario where the demand is the worst-one from a deterministic scenario where the demand has a neutral behavior. The resulting strategies are called min-max…
Collaborative development of a CPS-based production system
2019
Abstract The paper describes the collaborative processes and technologies used to develop a prototype for a Cyber-Physical Production System of USB sticks. The development of this system follows the model-based approach where co-simulations of different components, detailed at different level of abstractions, serve as a basis for structured dialogue between specialised teams and agreement on shared interactions. The focus is primarily on the co-simulation technology, allowing a gradual increase of fidelity and independent testing and validation of the composing subsystems. This technology may be equally complemented with group decision-making tools to better support the collaboration during…
Inversión en Investigación, Desarrollo, Maquinaria y Equipo: Desempeño de la Industria Panificadora
2020
Diseased Social Predators
2017
Social predators benefit from cooperation in the form of increased hunting success, but may be at higher risk of disease infection due to living in groups. Here, we use mathematical modeling to investigate the impact of disease transmission on the population dynamics benefits provided by group hunting. We consider a predator-prey model with foraging facilitation that can induce strong Allee effects in the predators. We extend this model by an infectious disease spreading horizontally and vertically in the predator population. The model is a system of three nonlinear differential equations. We analyze the equilibrium points and their stability as well as one- and two-parameter bifurcations. …
Genome-wide association study for milk production traits in an economically important local dairy sheep breed
2021
In this study, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) for five milk production traits in the Valle del Belice sheep. Repeated measurements for milk yield (MY), fat percentage and yield (F% and FY) and protein percentage and yield (P% and PY) on 481 ewes, were available for the analysis. The animals were genotyped using the Illumina Ovine 50k BeadChip. Weighted deregressed breeding values (DEBVw) were used as phenotypes for GWAS analysis. A total of 23 genome-wide significant SNPs were identified: 3 associated with MY, 9 with FY, and 11 with P%. Several SNPs mapped within known candidate genes or previously reported QTL for milk production traits in livestock species. Additional…
Evaluación de los recursos naturales para un uso y gestión sostenible de la producción agraria en una cuenca del centro-sur de Córdoba (Argentina)
2001
The economical and social development in the Center-South of Cordoba, (Argentina) depends on the agriculture. However, due to low production and severe soil erosion, the farms are not longer economically feasible. This situation implies that the agriculture in the region might not be sustainable in the long run. This study assessed the potential production of the natural resources in the Santa Catalina basin, in order to improve their use and management. The estimated potential production is 300 % higher than the actual production. In addition, the basin is severely affected by water erosion. A new and more sustainable production structure was proposed for the basin, which increases from tr…
